Debi Waller - graphic designer and artist
It all started a very long time ago.
A few years later, the parent company folded during a recession; but the design and print side of the business flourished. My partner and me were offered the opportunity to take over that aspect of the business independently - we jumped at the chance.
Art college (a two year foundation) followed by a degree in graphic design at Exeter College of Art and Design, graduating in 1988.
Then 18 months of being a freelance photographer before starting full time employment as a designer in Somerset.
A few years later, the parent company folded during a recession; but the design and print side of the business flourished. My partner and me were offered the opportunity to take over that aspect of the business independently - we jumped at the chance.
During the following 16 years we offered design, print and marketing to businesses and individuals across the south west of England and beyond. During that time I co-ran and arts and crafts centre in Bridport, Dorset and edited and published a quarterly arts magazine for the south west of England.
Fast forward to 2004. It was time for me to move on. I left it all behind to start a new life in France and have never looked back.
I continued with the design work, at a distance for several years, before exploring other artistic avenues: painting, paper-making, eco-art ideas, and then wire sculpture. That's my favourite and I still do that to this day. However, graphic design is in my blood, and, although put on a back-burner for a decade or more, I have always kept my toes dipped in those colourful waters.
Fast-forward again to 2026. Over the last few years I have been involved with more and more design and my spark has been re-ignited. I work with several authors and have discovered my talents can be used to help in book cover artwork and illustrations - it was always my dream to be an illustrator.
Graphic design is just like riding a bike - once learned, never forgotten. Yes, over the many years it has been challenging - I have moved from a 'cut and paste' designer to a digital designer. Once upon a time I worked where there were printing presses, the smell of ink, the urgency of customers demands. The latter hasn't really changed, but these days everything I do is from within the comfort of my home.
Times have changed, but I haven't. I'm still that artistic teenager with a love of all things design, art, colour, and creativity.
